The 8th Continent

We are named after the 8th continent, Zealandia, a vast and fascinating landmass that stretches across New Zealand and the surrounding oceans. This extraordinary region represents one of the most pristine and untouched environments on the planet. With its deep oceanic trenches, fertile soils, and vibrant ecosystems, Zealandia is a symbol of the harmony that can exist between nature and life. At Zealandia Pet Food, we draw inspiration from this incredible natural world, using it as a foundation for our commitment to sustainability, ethical farming practices, and delivering premium nutrition to your beloved pets. Our mission goes beyond pet food; we strive to educate and inspire others about the vital connections between environmental stewardship, responsible farming, and the quality of what we serve to our furry companions.

The Discovery of Zealandia

In 2017, a groundbreaking announcement by a team of geologists shook the scientific world. They revealed the discovery of Zealandia—known in the Māori language as Te Riu-a-Māui—a previously unrecognized continent. For centuries, the prevailing belief was that there were only seven continents. Encyclopedias, maps, and search engines all reinforced this assumption, but the team of geologists presented compelling evidence that proved the world had been underestimating its geography. Zealandia was officially recognized as the 8th continent, and its characteristics were unlike anything else on Earth. It holds the distinction of being the smallest, thinnest, and youngest continent in the world.

Spanning an area of 1.89 million square miles (4.9 million square kilometers), Zealandia is roughly six times the size of Madagascar. However, what sets it apart is that 94% of its landmass lies beneath the ocean, with only a few portions—such as New Zealand, New Caledonia, and some smaller islands—visible above sea level. This submerged giant has captivated scientists and researchers, revealing a hidden chapter of Earth's history and offering insights into the planet's dynamic geological processes.

Zealandia Pet Food: Ahead of the Curve

While the official recognition of Zealandia came in 2017, we were inspired by its legacy much earlier. In 2012, we launched Zealandia Pet Food, embedding the values of purity, innovation, and sustainability into everything we do. Our brand was ahead of its time, mirroring the forward-thinking spirit of those geologists who uncovered Zealandia’s secrets. By naming our company after this remarkable continent, we pay homage to its purity and the unbreakable connection between nature and nourishment. Just as Zealandia rose to prominence as a scientific marvel, we aim to lead the way in offering superior pet nutrition that respects the planet and promotes health and happiness for pets everywhere.

The Geography of Zealandia

Zealandia’s story stretches back millions of years. Approximately 23 million years ago, this massive landmass is believed to have been completely submerged beneath the Pacific Ocean. Today, 94% of it remains underwater, forming a submerged continental plateau that supports rich marine ecosystems. Among its visible landforms, New Zealand stands as the largest part of Zealandia above sea level, followed by New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, and Lord Howe Island. These islands are like the tips of a hidden iceberg, representing only a fraction of the vast underwater continent.

The unique geography of Zealandia, with its submerged expanses and isolated peaks, is a reminder of Earth’s incredible diversity and resilience. It inspires us to think deeply about our role in protecting the environment and using its resources responsibly. At Zealandia Pet Food, we honour this remarkable region by crafting products that reflect its purity and abundance while prioritizing sustainability and ethical practices.

As we continue to grow, we are proud to carry Zealandia’s name as a symbol of our dedication to nature, innovation, and the wellbeing of pets and the planet alike.
